What Are TikTok Reposts and How Do You See Someone’s Reposts?
By the TikDop team ·
The Repost button quietly became one of TikTok’s most-used features. It is a fast way to share a video you like with your followers without making a duet, stitch or new post. Here is how it works and how to see what other people are reposting.
How reposting works
When you tap Share on a video and choose Repost, the video is pushed into your followers’ For You feeds with a small label saying you reposted it. The original creator keeps all the credit, views and likes — you are simply recommending it.
Reposts also appear in a dedicated Reposts tab on your profile (the icon with two arrows). Anyone who can see your profile can usually see that tab.
Who can see your reposts?
- Public account: anyone can see your Reposts tab.
- Private account: only your approved followers.
- You can also hide the tab completely in Settings and privacy → Privacy → Reposts.
How to undo a repost
Open the video again, tap Share, and tap Remove repost. It disappears from your tab and stops being pushed to followers.
How to see someone else’s reposts
In the app: open their profile and tap the two-arrow icon next to the videos tab. If you don’t see it, they either have no reposts or have hidden the tab.
Without the app: use the TikTok repost viewer. Enter the username and the Reposts tab opens directly, showing every public reposted video with view and like counts. You can open any of them, read comments, or download them.
Why reposts are useful to look at
- For marketers: reposts show what an audience genuinely values enough to share, which is a stronger signal than a like.
- For creators: seeing which of your videos fans repost tells you what format is spreading.
- For everyone else: it is a good way to discover new creators through someone whose taste you trust.
Repost vs share vs duet vs stitch
TikTok has a few different ways to pass a video on, and they're easy to mix up:
| What it does | Credit to creator | |
|---|---|---|
| Repost | Recommends the original video to your followers | Full — it's their video, their views |
| Share link | Sends the video to a friend or another app | Full — the link goes to the original |
| Duet | Your video plays side by side with theirs | Credited automatically |
| Stitch | A short clip of theirs, then your video | Credited automatically |
| Re-upload | You post a downloaded copy as a new video | Often lost — avoid without permission |
Reposting is the lightest option. You don't create anything new; you just say "this is worth watching". If you want to add your own take, use a duet or stitch instead. We explain the etiquette in more detail in how to repost and credit creators.
Does reposting help the creator?
Yes. A repost puts the original video in front of people who might never have seen it, and every view, like and comment from those people counts on the original. For small creators, a repost from someone with an engaged following can make a real difference.
It's one of the kindest things you can do for a creator whose work you like — and it costs nothing.
Does reposting affect your own account?
Reposts appear in your followers' feeds, so they're a bit like a public recommendation. If you repost a lot of videos that have nothing to do with what you usually post, your followers might find it confusing. On the other hand, reposting things that fit your interests can make your profile feel more alive between your own posts.
Reposts don't count as your own videos in your analytics, and they don't affect how your own videos are distributed.
Privacy: what your reposts say about you
Because reposts are visible on your profile by default, they can reveal quite a bit — your sense of humour, your politics, your hobbies, things you're going through. That's fine if you're happy for people to see it. If not, you have options:
- hide the Reposts tab in your privacy settings,
- make your account private so only approved followers can see it,
- remove individual reposts you'd rather not keep.
Our privacy settings guide covers these and other settings worth checking.
Common questions
Does the creator get notified when I repost? TikTok's notification behaviour changes over time, but creators can generally see reposts of their videos in their activity or in the video's stats. Assume a repost is a visible action.
Can I repost a video from a private account? No. Only public videos can be reposted.
Why did a reposted video disappear from my tab? The original creator probably deleted it or made it private. Reposts always point to the original, so when that goes, the repost goes too.
Can I repost my own video? Not with the repost button — but you can pin it to your profile or share the link again.
