How to Use TikTok Without the App (On a Computer or Browser)
By the TikDop team ·
Not everyone wants TikTok on their phone. Maybe you're trying to cut down on screen time, your phone is short on storage, you're on a work computer, or you just prefer a big screen. Whatever the reason, you can use a lot of TikTok without installing the app.
Here's what works, what doesn't, and a few tricks to make it smoother.
Option 1: TikTok's own website
TikTok has a full website at tiktok.com that works in any modern browser — Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge. On a computer, it looks a bit like the app turned sideways: a feed in the middle, navigation on the left, comments on the right when you open a video.
Without an account
You can:
- watch many videos on the For You feed,
- open public profiles and individual videos from links,
- search for creators, sounds and hashtags (although you may be prompted to log in after a while).
In practice, TikTok shows a login pop-up fairly often if you're not signed in, and some features — like reading all comments or seeing some profiles — may be limited until you log in.
With an account
Logging in on the website gives you almost everything:
- your For You and Following feeds,
- liking, commenting, sharing and following,
- direct messages,
- uploading videos from your computer,
- TikTok Studio for analytics, scheduling and managing posts.
For creators, the desktop site is genuinely useful. Uploading finished videos edited on a computer, writing captions with a real keyboard and checking analytics on a big screen are all easier there.
Option 2: Keyboard shortcuts on desktop
On the website, a few keys make browsing faster:
- Up and down arrow keys move between videos in the feed.
- Space pauses and plays.
- M often mutes and unmutes.
Exact shortcuts can change, but arrow keys for scrolling are reliable.
Option 3: Mobile browser
You can also open tiktok.com in your phone's browser. It works, but TikTok tends to push you towards installing the app with banners and prompts. It's fine for watching a video someone sent you; less pleasant for long browsing.
Option 4: Viewer tools for public content
Sometimes you just want to look at a public profile, read comments on a video, or save a clip without logging in or dealing with pop-ups. That's where tools like TikDop come in.
With TikDop you can:
- open any public profile by username or link and browse its videos,
- see stories, reposts and liked videos when the person has made them public,
- read comments and replies on a video,
- download videos without the watermark, save the sound as MP3, or view the profile picture in full size.
There's nothing to install and no account needed. It only shows content that's already public — private accounts and hidden tabs stay private. You can start on the homepage or go straight to the comment viewer or video downloader.
What you can't do without the app
A few things are still app-first or app-only:
- Recording and editing in TikTok's editor. The website lets you upload finished videos, but the full creation tools — effects, filters, green screen, duets and stitches — are mainly in the app.
- Going LIVE usually needs the app or TikTok's separate streaming software.
- Some newer features often launch in the app first and arrive on the website later, if at all.
Why people choose the browser
- Less mindless scrolling. With no app on your phone, it takes a deliberate decision to open TikTok. Many people find that cuts their screen time a lot. We cover more ideas in screen time and digital wellbeing.
- Bigger screen for tutorials, recipes and anything with small text.
- Work and study. Easier to save, share and reference videos alongside other tabs.
- Privacy. A browser has fewer permissions than an app — no access to your contacts, camera or location unless you explicitly allow it.
Tips for a smoother browser experience
- Bookmark profiles you check often instead of following, if you'd rather not have an account.
- Use a private or incognito window if you don't want your viewing to shape your logged-in recommendations.
- Allow sound for the site — some browsers mute autoplay by default.
- Turn on captions where available if you're watching at work.
Summary
You don't need the app to enjoy TikTok. The website covers watching, interacting and even uploading, especially if you log in. If you just want to look at public profiles, read comments or save a video quickly without signing in, a viewer tool like TikDop is often faster. The main things you'll miss are the in-app editing tools and going LIVE.
